How Analytics and Live Tracking works

  • Generally speaking, Analytics works by inputting a live tracking code during the development stage of a website.
  • However it can be implemented after development if needs be.
  • Different analytics tools will obviously work differently but the most notable and widely used packages all generally work the same in terms of the live tracking code, tracking tools, status reports as well as real time tracking and the rest of the information that it supplies users.
  • By implementing the tracking code to a site you have access to a wide variety of information that come in the form of a status report.
  • Take Google Analytics for example.
  • Although this is a free package it is fully loaded in terms of the detailed information that it provides customers and is always improving.
  • Some of the information that it provides is detailed below:

  • Amount of visits
  • Page views
  • Bounce rate
  • Average time on site
  • Amount of new visits
  • Discover what keywords users used in order to land on your site
  • Location of users (geo location)
  • Traffic sources (search engine, links)
  • Allows users to set up goals and monitor conversions
  • Build up a profile of visitors
  • Link analytics to Adwords account

  • As is clear from above, analytics gives website owners and editors a great advantage in terms of profiling users and discovering the best way to target them.
  • For example, if it’s discovered that a large segment of visitors to your site are people living in Dublin are using a specific keyword that leads them to your site there are many directions in which this could take you.
  • Firstly, you may not have the particular key phrase that was used in your keywords list or even in your content. Also, you now know that a lot of visitors are from Dublin.
  • This could help when it comes to running a PPC campaign and geographically targeting customers (Facebook provides this option.
  • It may also encourage you to set up a Social Marketing Strategy as many people within your target market are likely to be on a social network, particularly Facebook.

There are two types of web analytics offered;

  • Off site analytics – measures what is being said in whole about your business/website across the internet. i.e. on forums, blogs etc
  • On site analytics – the analytics and live tracking of a website and the journey visitors take when they arrive on a site

It’s important to incorporate the use of analytics in order to identify the behaviour of your visitors. This in turn will help you discover the necessary intelligence in order to successfully market your site to a more targeted audience.
