There are some well known methods of researching usability factors; one of the more common being User Testing.
User Testing involves getting target users to perform tasks on the website. While they are carrying out these tasks it is important to observe their actions and note where they experience any difficulties and where they are at ease when it comes to using the site. Ensure to note any comments or grievances they make and apply all of these into improving the site and the overall performance of the business.
Other tips include:
Design a clear and simple navigation system
Keep all content clear and simple
Support your brand and business – this will reinforce a user’s impression of a site adn will make it easier for a user to remember your site and business
Provide a system that allows for visitor feedback – this will allow an opportunity to successfully and continuously improve your website while also keeping customers and users increasingly satisfied
Test the site on real users – by getting people who are not at all familiar with the site and technology will allow for a better chance of gaining the right feedback
Have a minimal amount of Flash present on the site
Create custom 404 (Error) Pages. Should the average 404 page appear there is an increased chance that this will drive potential customers away. A custom built one which guides them to the appropriate content is likely to result in a more positive outcome
